RIYADH: A total of 277 volunteers in Riyadh donated blood on Friday at the King Fahd Medical City (KAMC) in aid of Haj pilgrims during the current season.
The event was organized by the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath, (TNTJ) Riyadh. The group had earlier organized such blood donation campaigns at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and King Fahd Medical City.
“This year, we were able to collect 120 liters of blood from 277 donors,” Mohammed Faisal, spokesman for the group, told Arab News Friday. He pointed out that although 300 people turned up at the KAMC, some were told they couldn’t donate blood due to their medical histories. The event was open to all nationals who were willing to contribute to this purpose. Men and women expatriates from all parts of India and Sri Lankan formed the majority of the group of donors, Faisal said.
Explaining the purpose of such a campaign, the spokesman said that a good number of pilgrims who suddenly fall ill or meet with accidents require blood and this contribution will go a long way in helping such section of the pilgrims. Arrangements have been made with the hospital to dispatch the collection to be sent to blood banks in Makkah and Madinah.
According to Dr. Fathou Al-Alem, who manages the KAMC blood bank, the blood will be used only for hospitalized pilgrims in Makkah and Madinah.
There are 250 blood banks throughout the Kingdom.
